When should I do rehab exercises?
Patient treatment programmes at chiropractic clinics usually include rehabilitative exercises as part of the care package they offer. They are tailor made for each person and the injury they may have. It is really important for patients to do these as part of their treatment programme.
Firstly, you will be assessed and then treated. Most treatments will involve adjusting bones in the body to improve the alignment of the skeleton, which helps the nervous system work more efficiently by restoring its function. Chiropractic care aims to restore the body’s natural balance by realigning the bones to relieve pain and discomfort. After treatment, you will be given some tailor made rehab exercises to take home with you, which you can do in the comfort of your own home.
When is the best time to do rehab exercises?
There is no hard and fast rule for the best time to perform rehab exercises. Common sense will help you on this one. Here are a few tips.
- If you ache first thing in the morning, stretching before bed and as you rise may help to reduce the pain.
- If you know you are going to be stationary all day, in a meeting or sitting at a desk. Ask your chiropractor, if there are any discreet exercises that can be done for your condition while sitting or standing. It would also be wise to do some rehab exercises ahead of your meeting or activity. If possible try and do them during your break and again once you are home.
- Most exercises can be done more than one time per day, so check with your chiropractor. The more, the better!
- Finally, don’t stress out. Recovery is quicker and more effective with exercise programmes in most cases.
This means that performing your rehab routine will help to speed up your recovery rate, but don’t worry if you miss a day. Make the exercises fun and convenient. One patient uses a tennis ball for her exercises. She has it by the telephone and when she takes a call, she stands by the wall and does them! Simple!
